Engaging English learners in meaningful instruction through distance learning has introduced new or heightened challenges for school leaders and teachers. Instructional strategies for teaching ELs and how ELs progress in language development have not changed; however, our mechanism through which we deliver our instruction has. In this session, educators will analyze some of the most common barriers facing students and schools and discuss innovative and strategic actions that schools can take to address these barriers in a collaborative effort to provide ELs with equitable access to learning. Some challenges that will be explored include communicating with students and families, navigating new technologies, and department collaboration within school districts. Participants are encouraged to bring their own ideas to the session and initiate meaningful discussion with colleagues.
Intended Audience: All educators and administrators in schools in which ELs are enrolled
Instructor: Dara Schmick, Ed.D., ELD Specialist at Central Dauphin School District and PDE Statewide ELD Trainer
